GSW Night Riding Guidelines

Lights & Reflectors

Front - MANDATORY, required by law, a white light visible from a distance of 300 feet (RSA 266:86). Recommend minimum power of 10 watts, and of a sufficient duration for the length of the ride.

Rear - MANDATORY, a red reflector visible to a distance of 300 feet. A red light visible from 300 feet may be used in addition to the red reflector. Recommend red Vistalight (TM) type device, either flashing or steady.

Backup - recommended, flashlight or other device for use in emergency.

Pedal - required by law (RSA266:87). Requirement may be satisfied by reflective material on shoe/shoe covers. Must be visible for 200 feet in front or rear of the bicycle.

Reflective material/tape/clothing is strongly encouraged wherever possible. Reflective arm and leg bands are especially suggested.

Amber lens glasses are recommended for their help in cutting glare and in helping to preserve "night vision" when encountering oncoming headlights.

Routing

Traffic - wherever possible, low traffic routes are recommended.

Road Selection - wherever possible, roads with wide shoulders are preferred. Areas that have some level of ambient light (street lights, for example) are preferred.

Miscellaneous Topics

Group size - groups should be limited to no more than six (6) riders per leader. If a larger turnout is anticipated, multiple ride leaders should be planned for.

Liability waivers - As in other GSW rides, riders will be required to sign the standard GSW sign-up sheet which has the standard waiver of liability on the back.

Pace - because of reduced visibility, a slower than normal pace is recommended. This will be determined by the riding conditions and experience of the riders in attendance.

Helmets - are mandatory.

Clothing - Wear light/bright colored clothing allowing for additional visibility from others.

Special ride leader requirements - It is recommended that only experienced ride leaders lead these night rides.

These riding guidelines will be published periodically in Pedal Talk.

Because road rides take place on public roads, ride leaders cannot prevent a rider who is not in compliance with the above guidelines from riding. The ride leader will have the authority to tell the rider that he/she is operating in an unsafe condition and will not be considered part of the group.
